Poomse of Taekwondo

Poomse is the Korean word for forms or patterns. In Taekwondo, each form or poomse symbolizes certain natural forces and teaches students how to execute techniques in a similar fashion.

The overall purpose of poomse is to develop strength, precision, rhythm, breathing, coordination, balance, and mental focus. As students progress through the Taegeuk patterns, the degree of difficulty increases for the execution of all the poomse techniques. The forms get longer, and the moves require more balance, strength and coordination to execute.

By the time a student has completed all 8 poomse in the Taegeuk series, he or she will have an excellent sense of how to execute the techniques with the characteristics mentioned above.

A seasoned martial artist knows that poomse alone will not protect him or her in a self defense situation, but knows that combined with other drills, such as sparring, poomse will develop a powerful Taekwondoist. Poomse is the Yin of Taekwondo and sparring is the Yang. The two coupled together complete a martial artist mentally and physically.

Each poomse is to be practiced so many times that the moves are engrained in a students mind and are done with fluidity, power, rhythm, balance, and precision. Students should not have to think of what the next move- stance, block, punch or kick should be. Only after practicing a pattern hundreds of times, will the student begin to understand the true meaning behind the moves in the poomse.

Taegeuk, when translated, means “Eternal Greatness.” Taegeuk poomse integrates the methods of attack, defense, forward movement and retreat, control of the speed of movements, and the intensity of the actions.

Taegeuk is represented by a tri-gram which symbolizes the 8 elemental forces in nature. The 8 tri-gram, called Kwae, are arranged to go along with the Taegeuk symbol in an orderly system. Each tri-gram, or Kwae, represents one of the poomse in the Taegeuk series.

Taegeuk Il Jang ( 1 Jang )

Taegeuk Il Jang represents “Keon”, one of the 8 Kwae’s. This poomse symbolizes Heaven and Light (Yang). The Keon represents the beginning of the creation of all things in the universe. Taegeuk Il Jang represents the beginning of all training in Taekwondo. Taegeuk Il Jang consists of walking stances, front stances, low blocks,  high blocks, middle punches, and front kicks.

Taegeuk Yi Jang ( 2 Jang )

Taegeuk Yi Jang represents “Tae”, one of the 8 Kwae’s. This poomse symbolizes inner firmness and outer softness and strength of the mind. Taegeuk Yi Jang also reminds us that we can overcome any limitations given to us in life. Taegeuk Yi jang consists of walking stances, front stances, low blocks, middle punches, high punches, and inward middle blocks.

Taegeuk Sam Jang ( 3 Jang )
